It's normal to be concerned if your new hearing aids feel uncomfortable. After all, you've just introduced something new and fairly permanent to your ears.
But if you've had no problems with your hearing aids up till now and they've suddenly started becoming uncomfortable, then it's a good idea to speak with your hearing specialist about it to make sure they still fit properly.
What Does It Mean If My Hearing Aids Are Uncomfortable?
Not all discomfort means you should see an audiologist for further evaluation. Consider the following:
1. The Adjustment Period
If your hearing aids are new, it will take a week to four months to get used to wearing them. It's not like breaking in new shoes, but wearing a new device can feel strange for a bit. It can also take a while to get used to the new sounds and to retrain the brain to learn which sounds to engage with.
2. The Physical Fit
The feeling could be from how the device is physically fitting into the ear canal. While we use custom earmolds for every patient to ensure a proper physical fit, it's possible that they might still not fit properly, especially if you bought a one-size-fits-all hearing aid.
You'll likely never get a good initial fit from an online-bought hearing aid. The only hearing aids that fit well are those that are custom fit by a hearing expert.
If you feel pain, it's possible that your ear has developed a new bump or crease that's constantly rubbing against the hearing aid. An improper fit can also lead to sores and infection.
3. The Acoustic Fit
If you're getting uncomfortable feedback in your ears, your hearing aids might need programming to allow for a better acoustical fit (sound quality).
Feedback could also be due to a poor fit, in which case, you'll also need to see your hearing expert to fit it properly.
4. The Sensitivity Fit
A small number of people might find their skin has an allergic reaction to the materials used to make the hearing aids – something more common with budget-priced aids. An audiologist can help you find an alternative one that you don't react to.
Fortunately, most hearing aids come with a trial period, and you can use your refund to replace them with a higher-quality product.
5. Cleaning And Maintenance
If you like to stay active, it's possible that sweat is building up around your hearing aids and irritating the skin. Your hearing aid provider should tell you on day one how to clean them often and properly.
